Two strangers met eight weeks ago with no dancing experience – now they’ve won the top prize at Christchurch’s local Dancing with the Stars.

Jazz Magellan and Viny Berhault took out first place at the Home and Family-run competition at Christ’s College on Saturday night.

Berhault said the dance was “very scary” but was “pumping” after the win.

The two raised about $6000 for Home and Family, which a not-for-profit Christchurch organisation that helps vulnerable children and families.

Twenty amateur dancers competed in the event including our very own Holmwood sales consultant Kim Ric-Hansen. Dancers spent seven weeks training with Dancing with the Stars professionals Vanessa and Scott Cole.

The Coles judged along with former New Zealand cricketer Chris Harris, who was a finalist on the televised TVNZ version earlier this year. The event was MCed by one of Holmwood’s top performing agents, Chris Lewis.

Home and Family fundraising manager Eve Wingerath said each dancer was “outstanding”. All in the event raised $50,000 for Home and Family.

Congratulations to all!

A chance to remember Chalky Carr at the public launch of the Chalky Carr Trust and a gala dinner to raise funds for people who are bound together by cancer.

Date: Saturday 24 March 2018
Venue: Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetu

Kevin “Chalky” Carr the former All Black’s Logistics Manager, Royal Marine Commando and Royal New Zealand Navy Officer, loving husband and father died of pancreatic cancer earlier this year. Prior to his death an ‘attitude of gratitude’ and determination to make a practical difference motivated Chalky to raise money for people whose lives are being affected by cancer.

Chalky was a brave, determined man – he was awarded the New Zealand Bravery Medal by the Governor-General for his actions saving lives at the CTV Building in the Christchurch Earthquake in February 2011.

All funds raised from the Gala Dinner will go to making a practical difference in the lives of people and families affected by cancer and to aid research into pancreatic cancer, one of New Zealand’s most common and aggressive forms of cancer.

Our very own Heather and Mitchell are being auctioned off to cook a dinner for 10 people in support of the The Chalky Carr Trust.

Full list of auction items below:

Sold out. Telephone bidding will be accepted on the night.

Every Christmas the need for the City Missions’ services grow, and the Walk for Stars is a way for the public to make a real difference.

Harcourts Holmwood are proud to have sponsored not one but two gold stars, a contribution of $10,000 towards the City Mission’s campaign.

The stars will be on display from the 1st – 31st December, on the corner of Cashel Street and High Street, in the newly regenerated Christchurch CBD.

Holmwood CEO Tony Jenkins says the business is delighted to continue its support of Christchurch City Mission.

“When you look at how many food parcels the City Mission have sent out, how many families they’ve helped and how many people they’ve provided shelter for, the numbers are challenging. We are really proud to be able to help them in what is incredibly important work.”

Harcourts Holmwood’s association with the Christchurch City Mission is now in its third year and we are delighted to continue this relationship.

The statistics are challenging. In 2016 for example, the City Mission gave out over 26,041 food parcels to 7,475 families and provided 28,234 nights shelter. They do an outstanding job working throughout the year with the underprivileged of Christchurch. At Christmas time the need is greater and at Holmwood we want to provide extra support to the City Mission.

The commitment of our team is to contribute non-perishable food items, blankets, toiletries and toys to the City Mission. From now until Christmas our offices fill cartons and trailers with donations and deliver these to the Mission. Harcourts Holmwood also makes a cash contribution.

Join us in giving to the City Mission, and you’ll be helping those who need it most. To add to the collection just drop your donations into any of our offices or call us on 03 351 3002 and we’ll happily come collect it from you.

A record amount of money has been raised at the annual Cancer Society Ball in Christchurch. The glitzy event, attended by many of the city’s elite, was held at Horncastle Arena on Saturday. A total of $208,000 was raised, $38,000 more than last year.

Organiser Margaret Morgan said it was important to deliver record results each year for such a worthy cause.

The money would go towards sustaining services for people undergoing cancer treatment, including accommodation for out-of-town patients and driving assistance to and from hospital appointments, Morgan said.

Funds were also allocated to cancer research and prevention education in schools and the wider community. The event, hosted by comedian Ben Hurley, included a 30-dancer live performance, music and a three-course meal created by local chefs.

Cancer Society Chief Exe

cutive Elizabeth Chesterman said the ball was “invaluable for the Cancer Society”

The 2017 Harcourts Holmwood House and Garden Tour was a chance for the public to visit some of the outstanding homes and gardens in Christchurch, while giving back t0 the community. All proceeds from the event went to the Fendalton Open Air School’s pool rebuild.

At Harcourts Holmwood we are honoured to be one of the sponsors behind the fundraising of the School’s pool rebuild. It’s a fantastic cause for us to be involved with and this summer we have been solemnly reminded of the importance of water safety.

“Harcourts Holmwood has been with us every kilometre of the way for more than nine years now, raising tens of thousands of dollars for Nurse Maude through its sponsorship of our Nurse Maude cars. We’re proud to take the Harcourts Holmwood name across Canterbury” – Sue Bramwell, Nurse Maude General Manager Marketing
